چکیده

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is an emerging technology for detecting chromosomal disorders in the fetus and mass media may have an impact on shaping the public understanding of its promise and challenges. We conducted a content analysis of 173 news reports to examine how NIPT was portrayed in English-language media sources between January 1 and December 31, 2013. Our analysis has shown that media emphasized the benefits and readiness of the technology, while overlooking uncertainty associated with its clinical use. Ethical concerns were rarely addressed in the news stories, which points to an important dimension missing in the media discourse. Abstract

Factors affecting the clinical use of non-invasive prenatal testing: a mixed methods systematic review.

Non-invasive prenatal testing has been in clinical use for a decade; however, there is evidence that this technology will be more widely applied within the next few years. Guidance is therefore required to ensure that the procedure is offered in a way that is evidence based and ethically and clinically acceptable. We conducted a systematic review of the current relevant literature to ascertain ...

Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for aneuploidy: toward an integral ethical assessment.

The great promise of the pending introduction of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) for trisomy 21 (18 and 13) is that it enables one-step, early and safe testing for these abnormalities. The ethical debate so far has been limited to possible drawbacks of routine access to this type of testing: normalization of testing and abortion and adverse effects on autonomous decision-making. We addre...

Non-invasive prenatal testing for rare chromosomal anomalies

Correspondence: Dr. C.A. Ionescu e-mail: antoniuginec@ yahoo.com After numerous clinical validation studies, non-invasive prenatal testing for fetal aneuploidy detection is now a clinical reality. While non-invasive prenatal testing was accepted due to the high accuracy for fetal trisomy (21, 18 and 13) detection, recent research showed that genome-wide analysis is able to detect other fetal an...

Background: The aim of this study was to compare noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) of cell‐free DNA in maternal blood and amniocentesis in the diagnosis of aneuploidy. This study was designed to evaluate sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of NIPT for detection of aneuploidies compared gold standard test of amniocentesis.
